I’m contemplating my dilemma when I hear footsteps behind me and I’m seized with unexpected fear. It seems that all my boldness is a sham; a mask like those boys used to wear to hide the horrors beneath. I swing round and see one of Wilf Fuller’s sons, a big lad of around sixteen. He hurries past me with a quick ‘good evening, miss’ and vanishes down the path to the river. I hope he isn’t making for the boathouse and I’m relieved when I see him continue towards the gates of Tarnhey Court. I take the footpath beside Pooley Woods. It’s a lonely spot even though it is only a short walk from the village centre. But I have every reason to trust that Inspector Lincoln’s presence will offer complete protection. It is the thought of going home again that fills me with dread. I wonder if Father will bring Bone back with him. What will I say to the man if he does?
